I was impressed with the efficient ordering and delivery process, and my Banggood bar-mounted chain sharpener arrived in Cape Town in good condition. It is a close copy of the Granberg sharpener that is made in the USA and, from what I have seen (on videos only), the Banggood product seems to have improved on the Granberg in some minor respects. Also, it looks as if the file jig slides more smoothly than the Granberg one once it has been used a few times. The spring stop (it’s a spring steel “tongue”) that clicks in behind each tooth as you move the chain around was bent to one side on my sharpener so I had to try to straighten it. I also ground about 2 mm off the tip of it to help it sit more centrally above the chain. It’s still not quite right but it does work now. Unfortunately, Banggood has also copied some of the well-known weak points of the Granberg sharpener. There is advice on the internet about some minor modifications to fix these, which I have done, and now I am very happy with the product and I am achieving good results with my chains. One simple mod is to drill a small “dimple” shaped hole into the bar (choose the spot carefully and also make another one for when you flip the bar upside down). Then file the tip of the mounting screw into a conical shape that fits snugly into the dimple. This makes the file sharpener fit much more securely onto the bar. Some good advice is to watch lots of videos about how to use the file sharpener (for the Granberg version – there are none that I could find for the Banggood one). There is a bit of a learning curve in getting used to it, but once you do you’ll be very happy with the results.
