Works well on most plastic spools, but cardboard spools aren't too smooth, which could lead to problems. A worthy use of your money!

As others have said, look for Xiaomi Home on the Google App Store. Set your location to China Mainland. It was quite easy to set it up this gateway to my phone (it detected it automatically) and I've connected an Aqaria water sensor and mini button. Triggers on those sensors creates a push notification on my phone via the Xiaomi Home app.

At just over a fiver each, these are good value and worth a purchase. I am using mine with two 18650 cells. The handle makes them an ideal alternative to a torch (flash light) and they would be useful for lighting up a small cupboard when the power goes out - but you would need 4 or 5 of these to be able to light up a room well enough to paint walls etc.
