Q: It shows current also with an open circuit. With shared power supply it shows 20mA and with independent supply 40mA. can I fix it anyway?

Q: Which batteries should be used - protected or unprotected?

SmooveG I would recommend protected if you're going to use it underwater. But make sure the batteries are not longer than 67.5mm otherwise they won't fit.
